Six letters from Bidwell, written from Chico, California, to Haskell (probably Edward Wilder Haskell), in Marysville, California. Letters concern Bidwell's political career, his defeat at the state convention, the campaign of 1867, and his speech regarding the inadvisability of a third party. Includes letter from John Howell Books describing the materials, 1950; and notes.

Note:

Letters were purchased by Mrs. H.P. Compton of Chico from John Howell Books in 1950, and acquired from Mrs. Compton's granddaughter by The Bancroft Library.
John Bidwell came to California in 1841 and participated in the U.S. campaign against Mexico in 1846. He owned a large ranch near Chico and was involved in California politics. He was a congressman from California (1865-1867) and ran unsuccessfully for governor of the state and president.
